My northern buddy Angelica made this amazing costume for my other northern buddy Andrew. It’s based on a character from the Assassin’s Creed series, which was actually based on period-correct costume for European plague doctors, who would serve entire towns during outbreaks of the bubonic plague.
The creepy beak is a real thing- the doctors would stuff the beaks with herbs and flowers and other pretty-smelling things to ease the stench of their dying patients, and as a protection from the disease, which was then thought to be carried in a “miasma.”
Kudos to Angelica for phenomenal H-Ween work.
Andrew’s Dottore Malfatto* costume, as built by me.
The hat, collar, belt bag, and syringe holster are made out of paper. The big silver buttons are pins covered in aluminum foil. The belt was rattling around in my closet, but the coat, gloves and mask base were purchased. The coat is a generic hooded black Halloween robe (“Grim Reaper Value Costume” FTW), customized with strips of white fabric at the elbows. I sewed some rough, white stitching onto the gloves (not visible here). The mask base was a plain face, but I built on the nose using newspaper, masking tape, and plaster, cut parts of the mask for accuracy, and built in simple goggles made from toilet paper rolls, masking tape and plastic. My proudest build is the syringe, composed primarily of silver duct tape, a pill bottle filled with food coloring and water, and a drinking straw.
The costume came in third in his workplace costume contest!

There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own. Nobody. You built a factory out there—good for you! But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that maurauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did. Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea—God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.
